Heron Banks Golf & River Estate, near Sasolburg in the Free State, is a striking example of modern South African golf course design merged with riverside living. Designed by Danie Obermeyer the 18-hole, par 71 course winds through wetlands, bushveld and along some three kilometres of Vaal River frontage. Its layout balances holes set within scenic wetlands with others on more typical Highveld terrain, offering both variety and challenge. Several holes, especially on the back nine, feature water hazards that come into play alongside the river, along with fair bunkering and undulating fairways. From the longest back tees the course measures approximately 6 610 metres, making it a firm test for experienced players yet still enjoyable for those returning less frequently.
In terms of history, Heron Banks opened its first nine holes around 2013, with the full 18-hole layout completed the following year. Since then it has quickly become a tournament venue, hosting events such as the Ladies Free State Open, Senior Tour Pro-Ams and the Sunshine Tour’s Mediclinic Invitational. The course has developed a membership base of over five hundred, with members drawn by the quality of the greens, the wildlife, the river setting and the feel of space that the estate provides. It is also part of a larger river estate which offers residential plots and townhouses, enhancing the appeal for golfers wishing to combine lifestyle with play.
Facilities at Heron Banks extend beyond the playing surface. There is a clubhouse with a pro shop, a driving range and putting and chipping practice zones. Golf cart hire is available. The estate itself includes walking trails, boathouses, river access, and abundant birdlife, making it ideal for visitors who enjoy nature and relaxation in addition to golf.
