The Wanderers Golf Club in Illovo, Johannesburg is widely regarded as one of Gauteng’s most distinguished parkland courses. The layout is fairly tight off the tee, with mature trees lining attractively shaped fairways over gently undulating terrain. It is not brutally long by modern championship standards, so golfers who value precision, shot-shaping, and a strong short game will find it especially appealing. The course plays to a par 71 over 18 holes. There are multiple tee sets, including championship tees, club tees, and forward tees. The front nine features just one par 3, while the back nine includes three, a somewhat unusual routing that adds variety. Key holes include a par-five 10th that measures around 533 metres, and a long opening hole which in recent updates has been lengthened to a par 5 of about 516 metres. The greens are bent grass, and the fairways are kikuyu.
The history of the Wanderers Golf Club is rich. The original land was acquired in the 1930s under the leadership of Victor Kent. The course was designed by Bob Grimsdell with considerable input from Felix Oliver. Construction began in 1937, the first 10 holes opened in 1939, and the remaining eight were completed by 1942. In the 1950s three of the opening holes were lost to construction of the adjacent Wanderers Cricket Stadium. Over the decades the course has gone through upgrades: in 1999 Rob O’Friel led a redesign of bunkers and greens, making several modernisations. Bent grass greens were introduced earlier, and drainage and irrigation systems have been improved to keep the course in good playing condition through all seasons. Historically, the club has hosted the South African PGA Championship from 1972 through 1995, during which time many of the country’s finest players competed there.
Beyond the course itself, the surroundings are part of its attraction. Located in a prime position in Illovo, near both Sandton and Rosebank, the club offers convenience as well as scenic respite. Visitors enjoy a well-appointed clubhouse, a pro-shop, practice facilities including a driving range, putting and chipping areas, and full lodge of services typical of top golf clubs. Dress codes and booking requirements apply, and guests are advised to book ahead.
