Waterkloof Golf Club - Pretoria

Waterkloof Golf Club, perched gracefully atop Waterkloof Ridge in Pretoria, is a gem for golf aficionados seeking both challenge and countryside serenity. Originally established in 1969 as Monument Golf Club, the venue underwent a significant re-design in 2004 under the masterful eye of Peter Matkovich, and was re-christened Waterkloof Golf Club in 2006 as part of its transformation into a residential estate. The course now plays as a par-72 layout stretching just over 6 600 metres from the back tees, offering a harmonious blend of open fairways, undulating greens and strategically placed water hazards that demand thoughtful shot-making and precision. Notable are the par-3s, especially the beautifully framed 15th and the water-edge 17th, which are both visually stunning and formidable to play. The front and back nines converge before the clubhouse, flanked by a scenic water hazard that adds both drama and visual theatre to your finishing holes.

The championship-grade greens complexes, a hallmark of Matkovich’s design, sit lightly on the earth and undulate gently, beckoning players to assess speed and slope with care. While tee shots are often rewarded by generous fairways, the course doesn’t relent on the test: the par-4 third features a tight corridor demanding accuracy, the par-4 fifth is guarded by water on the left, and the closing holes present ever-present threats of water and bunkers that can swiftly snatch away a good score. Beyond the course, the verdant setting affords sweeping views, stretching over the R 21 highway and into the valleys of Groenkloof Nature Reserve, with the imposing silhouette of the Voortrekker Monument gracing the backdrop on a clear day.

Waterkloof Golf Club delivers more than just a superb 18-hole experience. Facilities include a full-service driving range, pitching and chipping areas, a practice bunker and a putting green, ideal for warm-ups or honing short-game finesse. The well-appointed clubhouse houses a pro shop stocked with essentials and rental clubs, as well as locker rooms, a halfway house and a convivial 19th-hole space. Golf carts, pull-carts and caddie hire are all available, while a restaurant on site welcomes players with hearty fare and local hospitality. The club’s attention to guest experience extends to thoughtful offerings such as group and weekday-morning discounts, making it both accessible and alluring for visitors of all levels.
