ERPM Golf Club, in Boksburg on the East Rand of Johannesburg, is a venerable and scenic parkland golf course with a distinguished history and a layout that offers both challenge and enjoyment to golfers of varying skill. It dates back to 1903 when three holes were laid out around what was then the first school in Boksburg, a wood and iron structure that still stands on the property, now situated beside the first fairway. By 1906 the course had expanded to a full 18-hole format. In 1992 it underwent a major upgrade, with the greens being completely reshaped and rebuilt, bunkers redesigned, and a new water reticulation system installed. A modern clubhouse was opened in 2002 to replace the older facilities.

The course measures a par-72 over its 18 holes. While the terrain is relatively flat, it is far from easy. Tree-lined fairways, well-positioned bunkers, water features and undulating greens demand accuracy, strategy and precision more than brute force. From the championship tees the course stretches over 6600 metres, with slightly shorter yardages from the club, seniors and ladies’ tees. The greens are bent grass and the fairways are Kikuyu, giving a lush and firm playing surface, especially in the cooler seasons. Particular holes stand out for their character, such as the par-5s which reward good tee placement and the par-3s framed by trees or water that test club selection under pressure. The back nine crosses Old Pretoria Road and returns for a strong finish on the par-5 17th and a demanding 18th.

For golfers visiting from out of town or for locals looking for a quality course close to the city, ERPM offers excellent practice facilities, a well-stocked pro shop, and comfortable amenities in the clubhouse. It has been used for tournament play, SA Open qualifiers and provincial events, so it is well equipped for both serious golf and leisurely rounds in a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
