Leopard Park Golf Club in Mahikeng, North West is a standout 18-hole parkland course offering both challenge and beauty in an otherwise dry region. The course was designed by Peter Matkovich and Dale Hayes, and opened in the early 1990s. Its fairways are flat and narrow, generally planted with Kikuyu grass, while the greens are bent grass, providing a firm and true putting surface. Water features are a major part of the design, with water hazards affecting eight of the holes. The 18th hole is especially memorable: its island green makes for a dramatic finish, forcing accurate approach shots if you hope to conclude your round in style.
From a historical viewpoint, Leopard Park replaced a smaller 9-hole course in Mahikeng and represents one of the region’s sophisticated golf developments. Over the years it has established itself not just as a sporting venue but as a social focal point for locals and visitors alike. The course layout, though generous in length, rewards strategy over power, and its mix of grass bunkers and water brings variety to every round. Given its bushveld setting, wildlife and natural vegetation lend ambience and interest to many of the holes, especially in the cooler parts of the day.
Facilities at Leopard Park are well designed for the visitor. There is a clubhouse offering refreshments, a pro shop stocking golfing equipment, a driving range for practice, and buggy hire. Guests can expect assistance with equipment hire and often find caddies available. The course is generally open daily from early morning through to evening. It is worth checking before you arrive for tee times and green fee rates, particularly given seasonal variation.
